In this session of Ask the Pastor, the pastor addresses several key questions submitted by the congregation, covering topics such as tithing, heavenly rewards, guardian angels, and the role of hymns and modern music in worship.

Tithing: How Can I Trust That My Money Is Used Wisely?

The first question concerns the struggles with giving and how one can ensure their money is being put to good use. The pastor acknowledges concerns regarding televangelists who misuse donations and the hesitation of those who feel their contributions may not be necessary or well-managed. He shares a personal experience from college when he struggled with giving, questioning why a large and seemingly well-off church needed his money. His perspective shifted when his girlfriend reminded him that giving is not about the people or the institution—it is an act of faith and obedience to God.

The key takeaway is that giving should be done with trust in God, not in man. The Bible instructs believers to be wise in where they give, ensuring that their church is using funds responsibly. However, the pastor emphasizes that the true heart of giving is surrendering to God, as demonstrated by the widow in the Bible who gave her last two mites. Even if church leaders misuse funds, believers must recognize that their giving is an offering to God, not to men.

Are There Different Levels of Rewards in Heaven?

Another question asks whether all people in heaven are equal, as scripture mentions that individuals will receive rewards based on their labor. The pastor explains that while salvation is through God’s grace alone and not by works, believers can earn heavenly rewards through their faithfulness. He references 2 Timothy 4:7-8, where Paul speaks of a crown of righteousness that is given to those who remain faithful.

In the Bible, there are five different crowns mentioned as rewards for believers who serve God diligently. These crowns are not for personal status but will ultimately be cast at Jesus’ feet in worship. Though all believers will be equal in their glorified state, the rewards serve as a means of expressing love and devotion to God.

Do Children Have Guardian Angels?

A question arises regarding Matthew 18:10, which states that children’s angels always behold the face of God. The pastor notes that interpretations vary, but he believes this verse emphasizes God’s deep care for children rather than definitively proving the existence of personal guardian angels. He recalls a powerful story of a young boy with cancer who viewed his suffering as a blessing because God had spared his siblings from the disease.

The pastor also shares a personal experience in which a stranger mysteriously provided $3,000—exactly the amount needed to pay rent for the church. Though he cannot confirm if this man was an angel, the experience reinforced his belief that God provides for His people in miraculous ways. While guardian angels may exist, the greater message is God’s intimate involvement in the lives of His children.

Should Churches Only Sing Hymns? What About Modern Worship Music?

A discussion follows about whether it is necessary to sing hymns in church or if modern Christian music is acceptable. The pastor references Ephesians 5:19, which encourages singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. While he acknowledges that hymns were not around during biblical times, they serve an important role in worship due to their theological depth and simplicity, which allows congregants to retain their meaning and worship God more effectively.

He expresses caution toward much of modern Christian music, noting that while some songs are biblically sound, others prioritize emotion over doctrine. He cites examples like Hillsong and Bethel Music, pointing out how some songs sound appealing but lack strong theological foundations. He also critiques certain secular music genres for their historical ties to immoral lifestyles and self-centered messages.

The pastor stresses that believers should be discerning in their music choices, paying close attention to lyrics, intent, and emotional influence. Some modern Christian songs are appropriate, but worship should ultimately be God-focused rather than based solely on what “feels good.”

Is Christian Rap Acceptable Worship Music?

A follow-up question asks if Christian rap is a valid form of worship if the lyrics are theologically sound. The pastor responds by asking what the intent of rap music is. He suggests that different genres have different purposes—some are designed to evoke deep thought, while others are built around self-expression or emotional intensity. He questions whether the fast pace and delivery of rap music allow listeners to absorb the message fully.

While he does not outright condemn Christian rap, he advises caution, as music plays a powerful role in shaping one’s thoughts and emotions. His guiding principle is that worship music should ultimately direct attention to God rather than self.

Final Thoughts

The session concludes with an encouragement for believers to study scripture deeply and examine their beliefs. The pastor hopes that these questions will inspire further biblical exploration, whether regarding music, giving, or heavenly rewards. He prays that this discussion will help the congregation grow in their faith and make wise, God-honoring decisions in all areas of life.
