Everything Requires Fuel

In the fourth week of the church's series in joy, Pastor Ortiz opened Philippians 4 with a simple observation: everything in life requires fuel. A car needs gas, a watch needs a battery, an air conditioner needs power. Paul writes, "Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice," and the repetition matters. When the fuel you rejoiced with the first time runs out, go get refueled and rejoice again. A believer who used to have a good attitude but has let it run dry has not lost their salvation, they have simply let the tank run empty. Pastor Ortiz called joy the second most important quality of the Christian life after love, and warned against what he called "resting Baptist face," a joyless expression that becomes a person's default when the fuel of joy is never replenished.

Guard the Second Thought

Paul tells the church to be careful, meaning anxious, for nothing, and to let their requests be made known to God. Pastor Ortiz was transparent about a moment after the church lost its previous building when the thought "I am a failure as a pastor" pierced his mind, even though he knew intellectually that the move was not something he controlled. A person cannot control the first thought that comes uninvited, but the second thought is a choice. He tied this to 2 Corinthians, which calls believers to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. Left unchecked, those thoughts drain the very fuel joy runs on.

Fuel Your Mind With What Is True

Verse 8 lists what a believer is to think on: whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. Pastor Ortiz worked through several of these directly. Pure means a pure motive, not just a clean subject. He used the example of inviting people to church for the sake of growing the church versus inviting them because you genuinely want them to know Christ. Same action, entirely different motive, and only one of them carries real joy. Lovely means the things that call a person to love, not simply things that are pretty. He told the story of getting saved as a four-year-old boy after a preacher's message caught his attention, being led to Christ by a man named Bob Gynan, and hearing that God wanted to be his father. He also described being bullied badly as a heavyset ten-year-old, and singing "Jesus Loves Me" through tears on the walk home until the comfort of God met him there. Those are the memories he still deliberately returns to. Of good report means the testimonies that can be leaned on, especially answered prayer. He pointed to the church's own recent history, having secured two different buildings within roughly eight days each, as the kind of good report a believer should keep fueling their mind with when circumstances get hard.

Do What You Have Seen

Verse 9 moves from thinking to doing: "those things which ye have both learned and received and heard and seen in me, do." Pastor Ortiz pointed to Paul's own example, a man writing this letter from a jail cell not knowing whether he would live or die, who had already said elsewhere that to live is Christ and to die is gain. Paul was not asking the Philippians to admire him from a distance but to imitate what they had actually watched him do through hardship. Pastor Ortiz named several faithful members of the church as the same kind of living example worth following, people who have walked through real difficulty and kept following God through it, and reminded the church that the promise attached to this obedience is the God of peace being with them.

Don't Run On Empty

Pastor Ortiz closed by returning to the fuel picture. A life emptied of the things that stoke joy will fill that void with something else, and he named young people and church members who are running on empty joy, filling the space instead with drama and superficial highs and lows: a good meal, a bad night's sleep, more work than expected. An empty life will always get filled with something. The only question is what. He closed in prayer, asking the church to search their own hearts for missing joy and to recommit to fueling their minds with what verse 8 lists, so the God of peace could remain with them.
