The sermon, based on 1 Thessalonians 2, emphasizes the balance between boldness and gentleness in Christian living, particularly in leadership and parenting. The pastor begins by reflecting on the dedication of parents in the church and how God led him to study 1 Thessalonians 1-2 over the past month. He highlights Paul’s boldness in preaching the gospel despite suffering and opposition, using a modern-day example of a street preacher in San Francisco who stood firm even when threatened at gunpoint.

Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians 2:3-6 emphasize sincerity in ministry. Unlike corrupt leaders—whether pastors or politicians—who manipulate people for personal gain, Paul speaks the truth without deceit or flattery. However, truth can be difficult to accept, as many claim to want honesty but struggle when confronted with it. The message underscores the importance of speaking truth in love without distorting it to make it more palatable.

The Balance Between Boldness and Gentleness

The sermon’s key verse, 1 Thessalonians 2:7, describes Paul’s approach to the church as a nursing mother caring for her children. This imagery highlights the necessity of a nurturing spirit, which is often undervalued in today’s society. Gentleness is frequently mistaken for weakness, but true leadership—whether in pastoring, parenting, or guiding others—requires a balance between firm conviction and tender care.

The pastor shares personal reflections on his upbringing, recalling how his mother instilled both fear and love in him. He stresses that children need both discipline and kindness to develop properly. Many people grow up in homes where parents never express love, apologize, or admit wrongdoing, leading to generational struggles with emotional expression. Conversely, others overcompensate by being too lenient, avoiding discipline altogether, which results in passive or entitled children.

The balance between nurture and discipline is crucial. Parents should correct their children but never in anger. He shares his own practice of allowing time to cool down before disciplining his children, ensuring it is done with control and love rather than frustration. The goal is to teach consequences, as life itself is full of them, while maintaining a loving relationship.

Avoiding Overprotection and Overbearing Control

Over-nurturing can be as damaging as harsh discipline. The pastor warns against coddling children to the point where they lack independence. Many young adults today, even well into their late 20s, struggle to leave home because they were overprotected and never allowed to face challenges. Parents must let children experience responsibility, submit to authority, and develop problem-solving skills rather than shielding them from every difficulty.

This extends beyond parenting to leadership in general. Leaders—whether pastors, employers, or mentors—must not control or push people excessively, as this leads to resentment rather than growth. Instead, they must lead by example, demonstrating character, love for God, and commitment. Training up a child (Proverbs 22:6) or guiding others means showing the way, not forcing them down a path.

Nurturing Requires Labor and Sacrifice

Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians 2:9 highlight the labor involved in nurturing others. Just as raising a child requires constant effort—feeding, changing, comforting, teaching—so does discipling and leading others in faith. There is no shortcut to meaningful relationships; they require time, energy, and sacrifice.

The pastor shares humorous but heartfelt stories of his early experiences caring for his infant daughter, illustrating the unrelenting demands of nurturing. Just as a baby does not wait for a convenient time to be fed or comforted, those we nurture—whether children, church members, or disciples—will require our patience, effort, and selflessness.

True nurturing is sacrificial. It means putting others before ourselves, whether in parenting, ministry, or relationships. The Good Shepherd gives His life for His sheep (John 10:11), and Christians are called to do the same—to invest in others, stand firm in conviction, and nurture with gentleness.

Final Encouragement: The Eternal Value of Nurturing

The message concludes with an encouragement to remain steadfast. Though nurturing and leading are not easy, the eternal rewards outweigh the struggles. The pastor reminds the congregation of the hymn “It Will Be Worth It All When We See Jesus”, reinforcing that the sacrifices made today will one day be fully understood and appreciated when standing before Christ.

The call to action is clear:

Be bold in truth but gentle in spirit.

Discipline with love, not anger.

Nurture without over-controlling.

Invest time and effort into others selflessly.

Though difficult, the labor of nurturing is eternally valuable—so bravely run the race until we see Christ.
